The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed today’s news that the BBC has agreed to protect S4C’s licence fee funding until 2018.
In a letter forwarded to Aled Roberts AM, Rona Fairhead, BBC Trust Chairman, makes clear that she is pledging to continue providing the £74.5m per year from the BBC for the 2017-18 financial year in order to provide stability while the UK government reviews the broadcaster’s wider future.
Commenting on the news, Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson on the Welsh language, said:
“This is very welcome news.
“The proposed cuts to S4C were completely unacceptable, so I am very pleased that this funding has now been secured until 2017. This is the right decision.
“However, S4C deserves and needs financial stability for the long term. These issues must be addressed.
“S4C makes an immense contribution to safeguarding our Welsh language and enriching Welsh culture, as well as bringing many benefits to our nation’s economy. Every £1 of S4C spend is worth £2.09 to the Welsh economy. The Welsh Liberal Democrats will continue to campaign to secure the future of S4C.”
