Aled Roberts responds to ‘harrowing’ Flynn report

"Once again we see another shocking report that highlights the failings in the inspection regime in Wales and shows that we need a proper system in place to protect our most vulnerable citizens. It’s clear Wales needs a new watchdog, at arms’ length from the Welsh Government, which is properly designed to act independently and safeguard patients."

Commenting on the publication of the Flynn Report, Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Older people, said:

“This is a truly harrowing report. My thoughts go out to everyone who has been affected by these horrific events.

“The Welsh Labour Government must ensure it implements all of the recommendations that are made in this comprehensive report. Lessons must be learnt so that we minimise the chances of people being subjected to such mistreatment in the future.

“Once again we see another shocking report that highlights the failings in the inspection regime in Wales and shows that we need a proper system in place to protect our most vulnerable citizens. It’s clear Wales needs a new watchdog, at arms’ length from the Welsh Government, which is properly designed to act independently and safeguard patients.

“If you read the heart-breaking testimonies of the people who experienced such shocking treatment in these care homes, there can be little doubt that these people’s human rights were severely breached. The Welsh Government needs to consider enshrining human rights within social care legislation.

“It is absolutely essential that the Welsh Government takes forward the suggestion that the significance of deep pressure ulcers is elevated to that of a notifiable condition, meaning authorities have to monitor the condition.”
