The process of individual members’ debates within the national Assembly provides an opportunity for backbenchers to introduce issues of topical importance and I raised a debate this week alongside my colleagues David Rees (Aberafan) and Mike Hedges (Swansea East) to draw attention to the crisis within the steel industry. Communities such as Brymbo and Shotton in north east Wales have experienced the impact of the closure of large steelworks during recent decades. We pressed the Welsh Government to formulate practical measures of support in areas such as business rates whilst calling on the UK Government to do more in the short term over high energy costs and called on them to lead European action to tackle imports.
