No greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, Aled Roberts is backing plans to have Wales lead the way on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and calling for a legal target to reduce emissions by 100% by 2050.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have tabled an amendment to the Environment (Wales) Bill to enshrine such a target in law and has led a debate in the Welsh Assembly calling on the Welsh Government to “lead with ambition” ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, by supporting a target for a 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The call builds upon previous policies announced by the Welsh Lib Dems for Wales to produce enough energy to meet its own needs by 2050, and to overhaul the planning system in favour of small-scale community renewable energy projects.

Aled Roberts said:

“Climate change is one of the biggest threats facing us, and Welsh Liberal Democrats know that Wales needs to play its part in fighting it. Setting this target would be very ambitious, but this is exactly the ambition and leadership that we need.

“But we shouldn’t be viewing tackling climate change as just an obligation, but more as an opportunity to build a stronger, greener economy here in Wales. With the right ambition and policies, we could lead the way in renewable technologies and in decarbonising our energy sector.

“It’s clear that Labour can’t be trusted to deliver a greener Wales given that we are lagging behind the rest of the UK in reducing our emissions; meanwhile the Tories have declared war on the renewables sector in government.

“Only the Welsh Liberal Democrats have the ambition and the fresh ideas that Wales needs to tackle climate change and develop a strong, green economy.”
