Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales has gained the commitment of the Minister for Transport that the £10 million secured by the Welsh Lib Dems which cannot be committed for rail schemes in North Wales during this financial year will be protected. The Minister also pledged to conduct a thorough review to address what she called ‘unacceptable’ delays to rail work in the region.
Speaking following Questions to the Minister for Transport on Wednesday, Aled Roberts said:
“I have been highlighting these issues with the Minister for some time and the speed of progress has been disappointing to say the least.
“Today, the Minister agreed with me that the delay in carrying out work on the Chester-Wrexham line is unacceptable but has confirmed that the £10 million investment will definitely go ahead in the next financial year.
“The Minister has expressed her ‘grave reservations’ with Network Rail’s performance in North Wales, and in all honesty I would have expected these issues to have been identified by the Welsh Labour Government much sooner”.
“Whilst these commitments have been given to me by the Minister today, it is crucial that the review does not exacerbate the problem and lead to even more delays. I will continue to monitor the situation and challenge the Minister on delivery and performance for the rail users of North Wales”.
