The Welsh Liberal Democrats today reiterated their stance against fracking by calling on the Welsh Government to give local planning authorities reasons to reject applications for fracking.

They called on the Welsh Government to issue a new Technical Advice Note to set out the environmental and health standards expected of fracking operations so that local planning authorities can reject applications for fracking unless it is proven safe to do so.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats policy on fracking has been very clear for a number of years,” commented Aled Roberts. “The environmental and health risks of fracking cannot be ignored and there is no scientific evidence to show that it is safe. Shale gas extraction would increase both short and long-term greenhouse gas emission rates and contribute towards global warming.

”Given the mounting body of evidence against fracking, I can only assume that those who support it are doing so purely on the basis of economic gain, whilst ignoring the potential risks to the environment and public health. For this reason we are determined that Wales should remain a frack free zone.”
