Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales and the party’s Spokesperson for Education has criticised the Welsh Government’s lack of foresight in addressing college funding concerns.
Commenting following an Urgent Question in the Siambr today, Aled Roberts said:
“These allegations are deeply worrying and the Welsh Labour Government needs to ensure that there is no chance of such allegations arising elsewhere.
“Concerns were raised in the Children, Young People and Education Committee during scrutiny of the Higher Education Bill earlier this year.
“At that time, the Government acknowledged that the regulatory oversight applied to specifically designated courses was minimal and did not enable quality assessment or financial assurance of the provider.
“In addition, representatives of Cardiff Metropolitan University, Unison Cymru and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) expressed their own concerns regarding the regulation framework for alternative providers of higher education.
“The Minister told the committee at the time that work was ongoing with the UK Government and we need to be reassured that the new system is now ready to be rolled out and the necessary regulations have been prepared.
“Despite these warnings the Welsh Government still have responsibility for oversight of this situation and it is not acceptable for them to seek to abdicate that responsibility to a private validation company who assured the Government only a month ago that everything was in order”.
