Success for Aled Roberts’ campaign to save Wrexham’s commuter train to Birmingham

North Wales Liberal Democrat Assembly Member Aled Roberts has welcomed the decision by Arriva Trains Wales to preserve a direct commuter train linking Wrexham and other north eastern stations with Birmingham.

North Wales Liberal Democrat Assembly Member Aled Roberts has welcomed the decision by Arriva Trains Wales to preserve a direct commuter train linking Wrexham and other north eastern stations with Birmingham.

In the consultation Arriva Trains Wales proposed to cut the 07.47 service from Werxham to Birmingham and the 07.00 Wrexham to Shrewsbury service. This would have forced all Wrexham commuters to wait at Shrewsbury with all the inconvenience and potential for extra delays that would bring.

New timetables recently released by Arriva Trains Wales show that both services will now be retained.

”This is a victory for the people of North Wales who backed the campaign,” said Aled Roberts. “We held meetings with Arriva Trains Wales and the Welsh Government’s Transport Minister to stress how strongly people felt about keeping existing commuter services.

“But most of all we were overwhelmed by the support given to the petition to save the Birmingham commuter train service. I have arranged to have regular meetings with Arriva Trains Wales and hope, with the support of people in North Wales, to improve cross-border commuter train services further in due course.
